Book of Mormon Historic Publication Site

The Book of Mormon first edition was printed in Palmyra, New York. The printing took place in the shop of E.B. Grandin, a newspaper publisher who purchased a Smith Patented Improved Press from Joseph Smith. Grandin was approached by the prophet about printing the Book of Mormon. Grandin refused the commission on moral grounds, but eventually agreed to print 5,000 copies of the book for a fee of $3,000.

Visitors can tour a restored building, which dates back to the 1830s. While there, you can see the original presses, and even see how the printing process worked back then. You can also walk through the store where the Book of Mormon was first sold.

The Book of Mormon Historic Publication Site is located at 219 E. Main Street. There are tours available every day of the week. For those who are interested in learning about the history of the Book of Mormon, this is the place to go. During your visit, you can see the restored print shop and bindery, and learn more about the Prophet Joseph Smith. There is no charge to tour the building, but it is recommended that you allow yourself at least one hour for a tour.

During the spring of 1829, Oliver Cowdery was staying with Joseph and Emma Smith. As the translation of the Book of Mormon continued, he wrote David Whitmer to offer his assistance. The Whitmer family agreed to help with the translation, and they visited the Smiths at Harmony, New York, in the spring of 1829.

It is where Joseph Smith first received revelations from the Lord and Jesus Christ. This “First Vision” set in motion events that led to the creation of the Mormon church.

After Grandin agreed to print the Book of Mormon, he and his staff worked to typeset it. By July 1830, all 5,000 copies had been printed. The first copies were sold on March 26, 1830 at Grandin’s bookstore. Today, over 176 million copies of the Book of Mormon are available in 100 different languages.
